It is a case of what might have been for a lot of fans as they wistfully note the date. It’s tantalising to wonder who would have featured in the pull-outs on cup final morning.

It was due to be an unusual Scottish Cup final since there were still Premiership league games to be played afterwards.

But that won’t have detracted from the occasion – and a potential quadruple treble for Celtic.

Alternatively, it could have turned out to be a famous day for Hearts, whose fight against relegation – providing their hopes were still alive – might have been ignited by bringing the cup home to Gorgie. Or was the trophy destined for Leith for the second time in four years?

Maybe this was the year Aberdeen were to put right 30 years of hurt and give Derek McInnes something more than a League Cup to show for his efforts at Pittodrie.

Of course, such joy has perhaps only been delayed. All four sides can still dream. The SFA have stressed the competition will be concluded – either this year or next. But the road to Hampden will be quiet this afternoon. There won’t be many fans immune to a sense of loss at around 3pm.
