Sport in schools - canoeing: Brother and sister get nod for squad

Strathallan School's Director of Sport Audrey Syme has hailed brother and sister Angus and Eilidh Gibson after they were both selected in the Scottish Canoe Slalom National Development squad.

The canoe slalom team at the school was only started last year and under the excellent guidance and coaching of Jane and Gary Gibson - Angus and Eilidh's parents - it has progressed well.

Syme said: "We entered the Alva Scottish Schools and Division 3/4 Championships for the first time last year and it really was quite amazing to see pupils doing so well when they only started paddling six months earlier. We sent a team of 13 and once all the points from the individual events were added together, Strathallan came out as the top school.

"I am absolutely delighted with the progress of the team and Angus and Eilidh continue to inspire other pupils - they have both worked very hard."

The aim of the National Development Squad is to get youngsters up to Great Britain junior team standard with the hope of getting them to the Junior World Championships in two to four years time.

A slalom course was recently installed at Strathallan on the school pond to assist Angus and Eilidh's training.
