Speedway: Tully to partner Pijper in speedway Pairs champs

With Craig Cook out injured, Andrew Tully will now partner Theo Pijper in tonight’s Premier League speedway Pairs Championship at Somerset’s Oak Tree Arena.

But the Edinburgh Monarchs duo are drawn in a tough Group B against defending champions Glasgow Tigers, Sheffield Tigers, Scunthorpe Scorpions, and home side Somerset Rebels.

Dutchman Pijper is making his debut in the event, but Tully partnered Ryan Fisher on a previous appearance, and says: “I’d like another crack at winning it, but it’s a strong field and a lot will depend on what track conditions are like.

“I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure Andy and myself will do our best because I know a lot of Edinburgh fans are travelling down to support us.”

Glasgow are represented by skipper Joe Screen and Josh Grajczonek, and Screen admitted it will be hard to win it twice in succession.

“I’d love to win it again because it was one of the highlights of last year for me and my then partner James Grieves. I don’t think we were one of the fancied pairs but conditions went in our favour and we went on to win it.

“Josh and myself will have to work very hard this time, it’s a high quality field.

“The key is to work as a pair and I will discuss our
strategy with Josh beforehand.”

Meanwhile Monarchs’ next home match is a league double header against Scunthorpe and Redcar at
Armadale next Friday with a 7pm start.

Admission prices are: Adults £27, Seniors £22, Child (12-15) £10, Child (Under 12) £2.

Monarchs also visit Newcastle Diamonds on Monday for the re-staging of their fixture which was rained off last Sunday.
