Speedway: Fed-up Matthew Wethers desperate to end his ‘nightmare’ run

Speaking ahead of Monarchs’ Premier Leage speedway fixture against Berwick Bandits at Armadale tomorrow night, the Australian racer, whose renowned consistent scoring rate has nosedived on occasions this year, says no one is more disappointed than himself at his level of performance.

Despite some improvement in form, Wethers only managed to score three points against Glasgow Tigers at home last week and, while it did not impact on Monarchs reaching the Knockout Cup semi-finals, Wethers is far from happy at how things are going.

He said: “For me, the nightmare continues. I was on my Armadale engine against Glasgow for my first two rides but I was struggling and felt I was down on power. I decided to change bikes for my third ride but that engine blew up going into the first corner.

“I jumped on Micky Dyer’s bike but that wouldn’t go, I think it just had a faulty spark plug, so I finished up on  Andrew Tully’s bike.

“His bike handled so well, and it just frustrates me because that is how my bikes used to handle. I cannot work out what is wrong, I have tried everything I can but cannot find anything.”

Wethers added: “When you are not scoring points you cannot afford to make major changes to your bikes, so it has a snowballing effect. But I will definitely be making changes and will get the engines sorted out, I’ll also be getting new frames.”

Monarchs will be without  in-form heat leader Theo Pijper for the match. The Dutchman is on World Longtrack  business and rider replacement will cover his absence.
