Southern Barbarians 26-54 England: Eight-try England too strong for select side

CHRISTIAN Wade claimed a hat-trick and Thomas Waldrom scored twice as England secured the first win of their South African tour.

After defeat in the first Test to the Springboks, they gave their second string a run-out and eased to victory with eight tries.

They also conceded four on a hot afternoon, but the result was never in doubt with George Lowe, Graham Kitchener and Danny Care also scoring.

The Barbarians claimed the first lineout and No 8 Jacques Engelbrecht was driven over for the opening try after just two minutes.

The tourists got on the scoreboard with two Charlie Hodgson penalties and the stand-off combined with Waldrom after a lineout and the No 8 powered through.

Scrum-half Care was the provider for England’s second try with a neat grubber kick which Wade hacked on before gathering expertly to score. Jordan Turner-Hall then set up Lowe for a third try.

Barbarians hooker Hannes Frankin barged his way over before the break to make the score 25-14 with a converted try.

Waldrom found his way over out wide for his second try. Barbarians winger Norman Nelson then scored a superb individual try but lock Kitchener crossed again for England, soon foolowed by Wade’s second.

South African substitute Ntabeni Dukisa scored from inside his own half but England finished strongly and Care nipped through a gap to score and another opening was created for Wade out wide in the closing seconds. Hodgson finished the match with 14 points.
