South Africa beat Scots at Prestwick

TEST MATCH: South Africa’s amateur golfers gained revenge for their home defeat earlier this year by edging out Scotland 9½-8½ to clinch the Friendship Quaich at Prestwick.

The two-day contest went down to the wire, with Paul Shields narrowly missing a 15-foot birdie putt on the final green in his match with Shaun Smith, which gave the South Africans the vital half point required to victory for the away side.

“It was a very tough and competitive match played in a great spirit and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last few days here at Prestwick,” said victorious team captain Colin Burger.

“The Prestwick course was magnificent with some great characteristics and it’s certainly something new we’ll take home with us.”
