Snooker: Musselburgh ace Muir pots another title

ROSS MUIR (Musselburgh) produced an outstanding performance to defeat Scott Donaldson (Perth) by four frames to nil in the final of the Under-16 Snooker Series Event 3 sponsored by JMConservatories.co.uk at the Locarno Snooker Club in Edinburgh.

Muir, 14, took the opening frame thanks to an excellent 57 break. Both players had a couple of half chances in the second frame before Muir sealed a 2-0 lead by potting the final red.

Muir then went three frames ahead with a 67 break before securing the title with an excellent 90 break, only losing out on a likely century by missing the last red down the cushion.

Donaldson, 15, got very few chances during the match and was unfortunate to come up against an opponent playing some outstanding snooker.

Paul Marinello, who refereed the match, said: "That was as impressive performance as I have seen by any 14-year-old in a final. He never gave young Scott a chance and showed some real maturity in his play. If he keeps improving as he is, he could be some player."

The under-16 Series has been sponsored by Penicuik's John McGovern, who is a windows, doors and conservatory expert, and kindly contributed 500 towards a development fund for the under-16 players.

Muir, the Junior Pot Black Champion, now leads the rankings with Donaldson just behind him in the race for top spot. Any players interested in joining the under-16 category should contact Tam McGill on 0771 873 9632 for more details.
