Smith, who swam for GB in the 2009 World Championships, missed out on his favourite 400m individual medley at the first round of trials in London in March but, with one place still available, he has switched to the freestyle.
Five Scots – Warrender teenager Craig Benson plus Hannah Miley, Michael Jamieson, Robbie Renwick and Caitlin McClatchey – have already gained their Team GB places and Warrender backstroke specialist, Craig McNally is another still with a chance of joining them.

Hide AdCarry, the double 2006 Commonwealth Games medallist, competed in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 and was unlucky not to secure a third Olympics in the first round. He finished second behind Renwick in the 400m freestyle in 3:48.36, just fractions outside qualification. In today’s final, the target for both Smith and Carry is to win within 3:48.92.
Stirling’s Jak Scott, 21 is another Scottish hopeful. There is one place left in the 200m relay squad.
