Smith makes it six Scots in team GB

Rosie Smith is a late addition to the Scottish contingent in the British team for the Great Edinburgh Cross Country this weekend.

Her inclusion for tomorrow’s event in Holyrood Park takes the number of Scottish athletes who will be in Great Britain vests to six.

The 26-year-old from Hunters Bog Trotters/Durham will run in the senior women’s event. It will be a first senior appearance at GB level for Smith after she ran the World Cross Country as a junior in 2004.

Along with Amy Campbell of Shaftesbury Barnet, Smith was on stand-by for the European Cross Country event in Slovenia in December, where all six Scots came home with team medals. For Campbell, the Edinburgh event will mark her first British vest at any level.

Smith has competed in the annual Edinburgh races before and was 12th in the McCain European Cross Country trial in Liverpool at the end of November.

The other Scots in what is a top-class field for the Edinburgh event are Olympic hopeful Steph Twell, Scottish cross country champions Freya Murray and Derek Hawkins, as well as student Laura Muir.
