Aberdeen have received a major boost with the news that Shay Logan has signed a new two-year contract, but the right-back has admitted it was the hardest decision of his life.

The 28-year-old had previously said he was considering a return to England in the summer to be closer to his family but has decided to extend his stay at Pittodrie.

Logan, who initially joined from Brentford on loan in January 2014, has made more than 100 appearances and been a key player in the team’s improvement under Derek McInnes.

“It was probably one of the hardest of my life,” Logan said of his decision.

“It’s not something I’ve done lightly, it has taken a long time to come to this decision but I’m happy with it and I think I’ve made the right choice.”

Logan helped Aberdeen challenge Celtic for the title this season and McInnes was delighted with the deal.

“I was always confident we could try and get there and get a deal done,” the Dons manager told the club’s official website. “It is absolutely brilliant news. Shay, since he came to the club two and a half years ago, has been very consistent with his performances and has become a firm favourite with everyone at the club including the supporters. I am sure they will be delighted with the news that he has committed himself to us.

“It has been well documented his situation is not the norm for most players but his love of the club has never been in question and we are delighted what Shay has given to us over the past two and a half years and delighted to have him for the foreseeable future.”
