Scottish 1-2-3 in UK 200m freestyle trial

City of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick was distraught when he failed to qualify for the World Championships at the first round of trials in Manchester in March.

But there was double delight for the Commonwealth Games champion when he collected his second gold medal of the British Gas National Championships in Sheffield last night.

Renwick had already secured a qualifying time for the World Championships in Shanghai in six weeks' time by winning the 400m freestyle on Tuesday, and his winning time of 1:47.46 in his specialist 200m freestyle was also more than good enough.

"The pressure was off after I won the 400m and got the qualifying time," said Renwick, who won gold in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last October. "I was able to relax a bit, enjoy the 200m and go for the result."

As in the 400m, all three podium places went to Scots. David Carry (1:49.48) was second again and Jak Scott, who trains at the ITC Centre in Stirling, finished third in 1:49.58. The top three will all be in the 4 x 200m relay team in Shanghai.

In the 100m freestyle, Scot Caitlin McClatchey collected the bronze medal and the added bonus of securing a World Championship berth in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay.

Loughbrough's Fran Halsall, who had already qualified for the world date in China, set a world's best of 53.61 secs in heading the qualifiers from the morning heats but then decided not to swim the final.

In her absence, team-mate Amy Smith took gold in 55.27 - just 0.03 secs outside the individual qualification time - and was closely followed home by Sheffield's Rebecca Turner in 55.52 and Loughborough-based McClatchey in 55.81.

Garioch's Hannah Miley, who has already qualified for the World Championships in the two medley events, claimed her first medal of the week with a bronze in the 200m breaststroke. Bath's Stacey Tadd took gold in 2:27.37 and Derventio's Molly Renshaw was second in 2:27.67 with Miley touching in 2:28.95.

East Kilbride's Corrie Scott and Edinburgh University's Kerry Buchan were sixth and seventh respectively in the breaststroke final, while Scot Andrew Mayor just lost out on a medal by finishing in fourth place in the 100m butterfly.

With another two days of competition still to go, seven Scots - Miley, Renwick, Carry, Scott, McClatchey, Kris Gilchrist and Michael Jamieson - have now qualified for the World Championships. Scott, who was a member of Scotland's silver medal winning team in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay at last year's Commonwealth Games, is the newcomer in a British senior team for a major event and it is a great boost for the youngster just 14 months' before the London Olympics.
