Scott Henry seals a record payday with third-place finish

SCOTT Henry picked up the biggest cheque of his career after storming up the leaderboard on a day of low scoring in the final round of the Fred Olsen Challenge de España, a Challenge Tour event in La Gomera.

The 25-year-old from Clydebank signed off with a swashbuckling seven-under-par 64 at Tecina Golf to finish in a tie for third on 16-under 268, three shots behind Spanish winner Spaniard Eduardo de la Riva (65).

Henry, who was tied for 14th at the start of the day, stormed to the turn in five-under 31 and held the lead at one point after following a birdie at the 12th with an eagle-3 at the 17th. His hopes of winning were dashed by his only dropped shot of the day at the last, but the former Scottish Stroke Play champion still picked up a tidy cheque for £7,769.

It was his second top-ten on the trot, meaning Henry will be heading into the Scottish Hydro Challenge later this month in buoyant mood. That event is being played at Macdonald Spey Valley, where Henry has won already this season, beating a strong field in an Optical Express 36-hole event on the Tartan Tour.

De la Riva finished one stroke clear of Englishman Simon Wakefield with a winning total of 19 under par to claim his maiden Challenge Tour victory. His total of 265 is the lowest winning score so far this season.

Wakefield narrowly missed out on victory after following up a superb 63 in Saturday’s third round with a five-under-par 66 to fall one shot short of de la Riva.

Two shots further back were the trio of Henry, Spain’s Luis Claverie and France’s Alexander Levy.

Murrayshall’s Gavin Dear closed with a 67 to finish in a tie for 13th on 272, four shots ahead of Lloyd Saltman (68).
