The Scotsman Rugby Show: John Rutherford launches our new legends feature

FORMER Scotland and British and Irish Lions stand-off John Rutherford this week launches a new feature on the Scotsman Rugby Show - Five Quick Questions with Scotland Greats.

A former PE teacher and insurance company director, Rutherford looks back on a career that brought 42 caps before he was forced to retire through injury at the first World Cup in 1987.

In our first quick-fire question-and-answer, he shares his memories of a first Scotland cap - and a threat to break his legs - his own rugby hero, favourite game, toughest opponent (it is an All Black!) and his choice as greatest Scotland internationalist. It is not Andy Irvine, Jim Renwick or even his legendary half-back partner Roy Laidlaw ... in fact, it is a forward. Have a guess before watching.

We also look back on the second weekend of RBS Premiership action with tries from Melrose’s win over Currie and the tight match at Raeburn Place between Edinburgh Accies and Gala, and look ahead to this weekend’s fixtures.

In the pro game, we catch up with the Edinburgh and Glasgow camps and ask newly-capped prop Ryan Grant, back this week in the Glasgow team, and Sean Cox, the Edinburgh vice-captain, how the squad reacted to the opening day defeats and how they will turn it around on Friday night.

We were planning to bring you a feature on new laws being trialled this season, but have had to save that for next week as we try to pack as much into the programme without it becoming too lengthy.

Thank-you for all the feedback to last week’s show - the good and the bad points - and let us know who or what you would like to see in forthcoming editions. Email our chief rugby writer and presenter directly at: [email protected]
