In what was a major breakthrough, Lossiemouth’s Heather Stanning and partner Helen Glover won the women’s pairs event, beating the New Zealand world champions into third place, with the USA second.

Stanning and Glover have previously lost both of the last two World Championship finals to the New Zealanders.

The only other British gold came in men’s fours while the British men’s eight took silver behind world champions Germany and the lightweight four took bronze behind winners China and South Africa.
