Schools swimming: Pupils sharing pool with Olympians

CHARLOTTE McKenzie (Larbert High School), Rebecca Murray (Braes High School) and Stephen Milne (Perth Academy) are in pole position going into the third and final leg of the Scottish Swimming Grand Prix at the Royal Commonwealth Pool this weekend.

Stephen is leader in both the men’s middle and distance categories, while Charlotte currently heads the women’s sprint section. Jedburgh Grammar School’s Lucy Hope is also in the top three. Rebecca is top of the women’s distance category.

The final Grand Prix is part of the East District Open and the event has attracted a stunning line-up, including Scotland’s Olympic silver medalist, Michael Jamieson, and Commonwealth Games Champions Robbie Renwick and Hannah Miley. The strong English contingent includes Olympians Liam Tancock, 
Fran Halsall and Lizzie Simmonds.

“The World Championship trials are in Sheffield next and so the swimmers have chosen the East Grand Prix as a great warm-up,” explained organiser, Helen Murray. “We have a whole host of last year’s Olympic team.”

The three-day meet gets underway on Friday evening and there are sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
