Schools golf: ClubGolf starts up at historic course

GOLF: Royal Troon Golf Club dipped a toe into ClubGolf when the home professionals coached 120 youngsters during the week of the British Amateur Championship. Now the famous Open Championship club has signed up with the ever-expanding national junior programme supported by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

ROYAL Troon Golf Club dipped a toe into ClubGolf when the home professionals coached 120 youngsters during the week of the British Amateur Championship. Now the famous Open Championship club has signed up with the ever-expanding national junior programme supported by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The first to benefit will be Primary five pupils in the Ayrshire area and Royal Troon’s ClubGolf programme will start in the spring using a combination of the club’s practice ground and local school sports grounds to provide affordable coaching.

“What we want to achieve is to get more kids in the area playing golf,” said the club’s Head Professional Kieron Stevenson. “Juniors are the future yet there’s not a huge amount of junior coaching in Troon. I believe that in doing so we will create opportunities to get kids into the game.”
