School basketball: Two new caps in squad for European test

Cara Black (Grove Academy) and Sam Butler (Larkhall Academy) are the two newcomers in the Scottish Under-16 Girls’ team for the European Championships in Gibraltar in July.

The final 12 includes two players from St Maurice’s High School in Cumbernauld – Taylor McKeown and Michelle Bradley – while most of the squad have come up through the ranks at under-13, under-14 and under-15 level.

“St Maurice’s have a great coach in David Evans and there is a good relationship with the Glasgow Rocks,” explained Baseketballscotland coach, Luis Romero. “The girls will be training together for the next couple of months and then there will be training camps in Stirling in April and June. We will then be going out to Spain and playing a few friendly matches against top clubs before going to Gibraltar.

“The girls will have to cope with extremely hot conditions during the European Championships.

“But we had a successful trip to Denmark as an under-15 side last year and I’m sure we will do well this summer.”
