Savage is leading Scot but can’t get close to Moynihan

CAWDER’S Jamie Savage pipped Craig Howie, the newly-crowned Scottish Boys’ champion, for the honour of top Scot in the McEvoy Trophy at Copt Heath, writes Martin Dempster.

Howie, the 17-year-old Peebles player, leapt ahead of his compatriot after a third-round 69 before closing with a 76 to finish 11th on 289, two shots more than Savage after his closing efforts of 76 and 73 in Solihull.

In the end, both were well beaten by young Irishman Gavin Moynihan as he recorded a wire-to-wire victory.

One clear at the halfway stage, the Island Club player maintained his advantage with a third-round 69 before signing off with a 70 to finish five strokes clear.

English duo Max Orrin (North Foreland) and Nick Marsh (Huddersfield) were both on 280, but it was Moynihan who stole the show as he followed in some illustrious spikemarks by claiming a title previously won by Lee Westwood and Justin Rose.

Greig Marchbank (Dumfries & Galloway) and Bradley Neil of Blairgowrie were the only other Scots to survive the cut, finishing on 292 and 295 respectively.
