Sarah Beaney Cup final: Murrayfield Wanderes 20 - 5 RHC Cougars: Wanderers secure double with comfortable win

MURRAYFIELD Wanderers captain Laura Steven and her side completed the double on Saturday with a hard-fought 20-5 win over old rivals RHC Cougars in the Sarah Beaney Cup final.

The victory on the Murrayfield back pitches also gave Wanderers their ninth cup win in 12 years, quite some record from the club who have dominated women’s rugby in Scotland over the last few years.

Early on the teams were well matched with both packs battling it out. In the second quarter, Wanderers began to take control and tries from stand-off Lisa Martin and centre Steven put them 10-0 up at the break.

After the interval they came out flying and scored two further tries to all but secure the trophy. The tries came from replacement Emily Leger and Martin before a late response from RHC.

For Wanderers, as well as those mentioned, No 8 Ruth Slaven played well, while former Scotland captain Lynne Reid defended superbly for RHC and made good inroads in attack when given the chance.

Earlier in the day, Hillhead/Jordanhill took the spoils in the RBS National Plate final.

Aberdeenshire Quines stuck to their task well early on and the teams were close as the match headed into the second 40 minutes. However, after the break, the Glasgow outfit took control and eventually won 58-15.

And in the RBS National Bowl final, a hat-trick of tries from Scotland winger Sarah Dixon helped Stirling County on their way to a 32-15 victory over Cartha Queen’s Park.
