Saltires fight for Josh Davey is thwarted by county call

Middlesex all-rounder Davey was barred from the four-day tournament last season due to an obscure development regulation. Cricket Scotland fought the rule and won, only to discover that Davey is required by his county next week.

Coach Pete Steindl said: "It's ironic that Josh has been cleared to play in the tournament but won't be in the team. But he has forced his way into Middlesex's T20 plans and we are happy that he is getting a good quality of cricket down there.

"Given our own T20 commitments in the future, it is also good from our perspective that he is playing the shorter form of the game.

"We have an excellent working relationship with Middlesex and it is their call as far as next week is concerned."

However, Davey will be released by his county for two ODIs against the Dutch later in the month.

Meanwhile, the loss of Davey for the I-Cup match has been offset by the availability of Durham's Kyle Coetzer.

The former Stoneywood-Dyce batsman, who scored a century against the Saltires earlier in the season, has lost his place in the county first team and will make his first Scotland appearance since last season's I-Cup final against Afghanistan.

Simon Smith returns to the four-day side while Carlton paceman Ali Evans is drafted in to replace the injured Matty Parker.

Smith and Ryan Flannigan drop out of the squad for the ODIs to be replaced by Gregor Maiden, Safyaan Sharif and Davey.

• Ireland have overlooked former New Zealand batsman Hamish Marshall for next month's Tri-Series against Sri Lanka and Scotland due to financial issues surrounding his change of country.

Marshall, who has declared his desire to play for Ireland, is eligible after making the last of his 66 one-day international appearances for New Zealand more than four years ago.

Cricket Ireland are keen to include the 32-year-old but have decided to leave him out because his appearance would result in compensation being paid to his county Gloucestershire.

Marshall's "free agent" status affords Gloucestershire payments from the ECB that would stop once he appears for Ireland.
