Hide AdDue to the threat of thunderstorms, a two-tee start was applied with the players going out in threes. Berger, who began in a four-way tie for the lead, carded nine birdies.
Knox maintained his fine form by opening with three successive birdies and picking up further shots at the sixth, 13th, 15th and 18th to keep himself in contention.
Knox, pictured, said: “What a dream start to come out, hit some great shots, make a few putts – that really settled me down and I knew I could build on it as the round went on. It is going to take another good score if I want to win. I have got to go out there and attack and play bold and be aggressive.”
In the amateur ranks, Glencruitten’s Robert MacIntyre and Connor Syme from Drumoig both finished in the top five in the European Individual Championship in Estonia. The Scottish duo carded matching four-under-par 68s in the final round to claim fourth and fifth spot respectively in an event won by Luca Cianchetti at the seventh extra hole in a play-off with Norwegian Victor Hovland.
Douglas Park’s Angus Carrick shot 69 and 67 at Leven Links for a six-under total and a one-shot lead over Moray’s Kyle Godsman (69-68) at halfway in the Amateur Champion Gold Medal.
