Rugby: Watson’s final fervour is doubled

WATSON’S COLLEGE captain Ramsay Young has a chance to make sporting history and take revenge when his team lines up against city rivals Edinburgh Academy in the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools rugby cup at Murrayfield on Saturday (6pm).

Watson’s have never won the trophy while Academy, now captained by Chris Dean, triumphed in 2009 and many of those on duty this weekend were part of an under-15 side who took that title by beating . . . Watson’s. Both schools are enjoying outstanding seasons with Academy unbeaten in all 13 games, while Watson’s only defeat came away to Newcastle Royal Grammar School.

Watson’s coach Ally Donaldson said: “In everyone’s eyes we will be underdogs so that will help relax the boys a wee bit.”

Academy coach Mark Appleson believes Watson’s must beat one of the best Academy teams ever. “In the 25 years I have been coaching schools rugby this team is up with the best I’ve come across.

“Freddie [Smith] scored three tries in the under-15 final win over Watson’s a few years ago and his brilliant mazy feet can take him round his marker without a hand being laid on him.”
