Rugby: Wanderers serve up a feast as Musselburgh win again

Murrayfield Wanderers’ first XV put on a show for the past players in attendance as they defeated RHC Cougars on Saturday in RBS National One.

A number of former players had gathered for a lunch prior to the match and will have been impressed with what they saw from Bruce Aitchison’s men in the 33-17 win. Winger Niall Watson led the way with two tries, while there were also scores from opposite winger Barry Turnbull, back-row Ross Sutherland and Fijian replacement Apenai Kororua.

Turnbull kicked the rest of the total for a bonus point win that leaves Wanderers third in the table, still 17 points behind leaders Musselburgh, albeit with a game in hand. RHC Cougars are sixth.

Musselburgh won their 14th league match of the campaign beating Linlithgow 29-0 at home. However, credit must go to Hawick YM, who just refuse to go away and their 67-5 win over Edinburgh University Blues keeps them just five points behind the men from East Lothian.

It is perhaps understandable that Edinburgh University were not at their best given that many players in the team had played last Wednesday evening in a specially arranged fixture with the University of St Andrews in London. They are eighth in the table, while bottom club Livingston lost at Ellon 42-19 and the matches at Garnock and Kilmarnock were postponed.
