Wyness loses head coach role at Aberdeen Grammar

Grammar were relegated from the RBS Premiership last month and, just last Saturday, were edged out 20-16 by Heriot’s at Rubislaw in the RBS Cup semi-finals. It brought to an end a fairly dismal season for the men from the Granite City, with the only plus point being the win in the RBS Caledonia Regional Cup when they defeated Howe of Fife in the final.

The club’s hierarchy have been reviewing the coaching structures in place and Wyness, who has been involved at Grammar for many years and served as head coach this term, has been invited to play a part in the process with a view to taking on another role.

Aberdeen Grammar chairman Gordon Thomson said: “We have initiated a review of the club structure, both on and off the field, given the restructuring of club rugby being proposed by the SRU and due to a disappointing season in the Premiership and youth leagues.

“The club is retaining its coaching staff and have recruited additional coaching support staff for the 2014-15 season. Kevin Wyness, who has given many years of sterling service to the club, has been asked to engage in the rebuilding process and discussions are ongoing.

“It is hoped that a new club structure and coaching plan will be in place by June at the latest and that will enable the club to succeed at all levels.”
