Watsonians’ fortunes continued their upward trajectory with an impressive six tries that dented the hopes of Chieftains, who are targeting second in the table and a home play-off, but were well off the pace on this occasion.
The hosts had the bonus point in the bag after a whirlwind first half. Ewan Fox opened the scoring in two minutes and was joined on the scoresheet by Michael Allen, with Andrew Chalmers converting both.
Chieftains fought their way back with a Mike Vernel try, converted by Jamie Forbes. Ali Harris booted a penalty for Watsonians but Chieftains’ Rhys Davies thundered over and Forbes converted to cut the gap to three points.
By the interval, Ross Graham dotted down for Watsonians’ third try and he was instrumental in the build up to a second for Fox, both converted by Harris. Chieftains continued to struggle to make the most of their periods in the ascendancy and they reached the break 31-17 adrift after Forbes landed a penalty.
In the second period, Thomas Gordon claimed a converted try to bring the visitors within seven points but converted scores by Willie Thomson and Rory Hutton made the game safe before a long-range effort from Ruaraidh Smith handed Chieftains a four-try bonus.
