Wales and Portugal away kit switch '˜to aid colour blindness'

The decision to have both Wales and Portugal play in their away kits during their Euro 2016 semi-final was to help viewers with colour blindness distinguish between the two sides, it has been claimed.

Despite the official reason for the change being a clash of red on both home strips, there was an extra reason for the change.

Tweets from ColourBlindAwarness, a charity aimed to raise the profile of red-green colour blindness, showed that the two green strips were clearly distinct from each other if you have red-green colour blindness.

The decision to play in similar coloured kits came after complaints from colour blind sufferers who had struggled to watch Croatia play Portugal in the Round of 16.

In that game, Croatia’s white and red kit and Portugal’s light green kit both came across as white, making it difficult to distinguish between the teams for those with red-green colour blindness.

One in 12 men and one in 200 women suffer from red-green colour blindness, meaning millions of football fans were helped by UEFA’s decision.
