After speculation that he was poised to move from Scotstoun and being dropped by coach Gregor Townsend for crucial end of the season games, Hogg seemed set for the exit door.

But, speaking after Scotland’s 24-6 win over the USA Eagles in Houston yesterday morning, Hogg said: “Unless you are aware of something I am not, then I will definitely be at Glasgow next season. Listen, all I can do is play my own game and that’s what I tried to do on Saturday night. There is no point in looking back, as long as I give my best for the team and do whatever I can, then I’ll be happy with that.”

The Scotland team who played against the USA wore black armbands out of respect for prop Geoff Cross’s father, Robin, who passed away on the Wednesday before the match.

Cross opted to remain with the squad and he started the game at tighthead, part of a dominant Scotland scrum, before being replaced by Moray Low due to a rib injury early in the second half.

“It was so close to the game but he [Cross] wanted to stay,” said Scotland coach Vern Cotter. “It’s up to Geoff. Geoff decides and his family. There was no pressure on him whatsoever to stay. We understand fully.”

Hogg paid tribute to the tighthead who put in a standout performance before his injury. “It was spot on from Geoff,” he said. “He’s had a really tough week and I thought he had a fine match, full credit to him.

“Geoff is a great man and we’ve been trying to pick him up as best we could all week. It was just great he could stay, he could play and that he could be part of a winning team. He had a massive shift against them because their scrum was going back at a rate of knots and that’s exactly what we want from the big fella.”
