SRU donate kit to wheelchair rugby team

THE Scottish Rugby Union has donated a set of shirts to help a team represent Scotland in the next wheelchair rugby Six Nations, which will take place next week.

Scotland and Glasgow Warriors players Al Kellock and Ryan Wilson handed over the jerseys to the West of Scotland Wheelchair Sports Club before they left for Scotland’s tour to South Africa. The competition takes place between Monday 17 and Sunday 23 June in Vichy, France.

It is the first time the side, made up of nine players, will compete in an international competition, having only been introduced to the sport last October. However, they will draw on the wealth of experience they have in wheelchair basketball.

Player/manager of the team, Gary Davidson, said: “We’re really looking forward to the competition. It’s all quite new but it’s a very exciting and physical sport. We’re all very fit guys and we hope we can use our basketball experience to come back with a trophy and make our country proud.”

Kellock said: “Good luck to the guys in France. It was a pleasure to meet them and great to play a small part in getting them ready to compete.”
