Six Nations: Brown calls on Scots to leave 50-50s

SCOTLAND captain Kelly Brown has called on his team to opt out of “50-50” calls in Saturday’s RBS Six Nations Championship finale in Wales.

Brown will be named skipper today after turning in a good performance against France, despite the team losing 19-17 to a late penalty. After the controversy around his being dropped for the England and Italy matches, Brown seems set to be joined by David Denton and Ryan Wilson with Johnnie Beattie ruled out by an ankle injury. With Sean Lamont also out and Ryan Grant struggling with injury, coach Scott Johnson will be forced into more changes.

That does not worry Brown. What he wants to see change is the team’s inability to stay on the right side of the referee with Scotland topping the Six Nations penalty count for the second year in a row.

“We have conceded far too many penalties,” he said. “We have looked at that and our discipline is something we have focused on this week. If it is a 50-50 call and you are not certain then you should leave it. In the past we have been so enthusiastic to make a positive impact that we have been penalised for it.”
