The Dark Blues dispatched Cambridge 33-15 but had to play most of the second-half with 14 men after scrum-half Sam Egerton was sent off for an incident at a ruck involving flanker Nick Viljoen.

Referee Matt Carley dismissed Egerton in the 51st minute on the advice of the television match official shortly after the half-back had scored a try.

Having put Oxford in a position of relative control, Egerton, who scored a brilliant try in helping his side come from behind to win last year, was adjudged to be “interfering” with a Cambridge player’s face at the base of a ruck.

Even when down to 14 men Oxford were under little threat as they romped to a record-equalling fourth consecutive win in the 132nd meeting between the rivals.

John Carter, Henry Lamont and Nicholas Gardner also crossed for the Dark Blues, while John Hudson kicked three penalties and two conversions.

Former George Watson’s captain Graeme MacGilchrist came off the bench for the victorious Oxford side, while Courtenay Morrison – son of former Scotland flanker Iain Morrison – started at outside centre for Cambridge.

The game was decided in the scrum, where Cambridge were comprehensively routed. At almost every set piece they were sent careering backwards and even on their own put-in were in desperate straits. A double substitution in the front row at half-time had no impact.

Toby May danced through the Oxford defence late on for a Cambridge consolation but the game was up by then,
