Heriot's 33-10 Marr: Five try revenge sweet for Heriot's

Heriot's slipped up against Premiership newcomers Marr in the first half of the season but made no mistake in grabbing maximum points at the second time of asking.

It was never easy, with Marr dictating play for long periods of the match and going into the lead just after half-time, but they were eventually overrun with a late quartet of tries.

Heriot’s drew first blood. The home side kicked for the corner twice rather than take simple penalty points and came good on the second attempt with captain Jack Turley touching down beside the posts. Full back Ross Jones converted.

Marr responded by penetrating deep into the Heriot’s half but the defence held firm and rolled them back to halfway before inside centre Gregor Paxton punched a big hole in the line and made it to the 22 where he was hauled down.

The visitors kept the pressure on with a series of five metre scrums until Heriot’s suddenly broke out to go the length of the pitch with Turley just spilling a pass that would have put him under the posts.

Marr were soon on the attack again, their pack had the edge in winning posession and territory. Stand-off Craig Kolaric tried a clever chip kick over the advancing defence but it bounced away from him. A tap and go close range penalty by scrum-half Kaleem Baretto was held up. But something had to give as the momentum built and it did right on half-time when blindside Mackenzie Pearce crashed over. Full back Dougie Steele converted to make it all square at 7-7.

With less than a minute of the second half played, McLean of Heriot’s was sin-binned as the penalty count rose and Steele kicked the points to put Marr into a deserved lead.

A renewed sense of urgency seemed to grip the home side but their attacking ideas were disjointed and unconvincing until a lucky deflected pass landed in the arms of hooker Michael Liness and he spun and fell over the line to get the try to regain the lead. The conversion drifted across the face of the posts.

A Heriot’s five metre lineout transformed into a textbook rolling maul that ended with Liness touching down for his second try. Jones converted. A minute later prop Stuart Cessford reached out to score the bonus point try and put the game well beyond Marr. Heriot’s veteran replacement hooker Stewart Mustard snatched the fifth try. Jones converted and it was all over.
