Godman one of three Scots to sign for Newcastle

FORMER Edinburgh stand off Phil Godman today signed for Newcastle Falcons with the prospect that English Premiership performances could see him go on and add to 23 Scotland caps.

Also added to the Newcastle roster today are fellow Scots Fraser McKenzie and Scott Lawson.

A season at English Championship London Scottish has helped Godman to show the knee injury which ruled him out of the 2011 World Cup is now behind him.

Godman, who will re-form an established half back link with Mike Blair, said: “At the age of 30 I feel that I still have my best years ahead of me.”

Lawson joined London Irish after that tournament while 25-year-old McKenzie (ex-Sale) is still regarded as having cap potential.

Edinburgh may not be guaranteed Heineken Cup rugby after next season amidst reports a compromise to save the event could see only four Pro 12 teams qualify automatically plus just two others based on nationality.

• Ex-Scotland back row Simon Taylor, 33, could be seeking a new club after leaving Bath.
