Glasgow Warriors set for two-day Aberdeen camp

GLASGOW Warriors are to continue their attempts to drive up support for pro rugby across Scotland by spending two days in Aberdeen next week.

The Warriors plan to take their pre-season training camp to the north-east and Glasgow and Scotland fly-half Ruaridh Jackson, who grew up in Aberdeen, welcomed the move as providing some reward for far-travelled Warriors and Scotland rugby supporters.

He said: “There’s a real passion for rugby in Aberdeen and to be back home with the Warriors will be fantastic. The build-up to the new season is always an exciting time and one of the aims of the visit is to reach out to rugby fans in the north-east.

“I know supporters who travel hundreds of miles regularly to watch Scotland and the Warriors play, which shows incredible dedication. There is also an army of fans who watch Aberdeen Grammar and other club sides in the area week in and week out.”

The visit begins on the evening of Wednesday 7 August with an event featuring guests from north-east rugby clubs, the business community and Warriors players and continues on Thursday 8 August with Glasgow weights and skills sessions, followed by a question-and-answer session with the coaches.

There is an open Warriors training session from 1pm and children’s coaching sessions from 4pm at Rubislaw, before the open training match between Glasgow and Aberdeen Grammar at 6pm at Rubislaw.

Aberdeen Grammar chairman Gordon Thomson said: “We have a close relationship with Glasgow Warriors and we’re delighted they have chosen to incorporate this visit as part of their pre-season programme.

“It will be an excellent opportunity to create a buzz around rugby before the new season begins.”
