Glasgow v Treviso game off after waterlogged pitch

Having conducted an inspection of the Scotstoun playing surface at 6.05pm, the match officials decided the game could not go ahead.

With most weather forecasts predicting that the rain will continue throughout the weekend, the two teams will have to reach an agreement on when to reschedule the match. If they cannot reach a mutually acceptable arrangement then they will be instructed by the tournament organisers to

play on one of the last

two weekends of the Six Nations – 7 or 14 March – when there are currently no league fixtures scheduled.

Warriors coach Gregor Townsend spoke during the week about the desire within his squad to get back on the horse following a string of disappointing results culminating in an undignified exit from the Heineken Cup last Friday after a woeful home performance against Cardiff Blues, and he was clearly disappointed that this game could not go ahead.

“The players want to play, but there’s no way you could play here. There’s puddles of water here and you have to look at the safety of our players – never mind the spectacle we would put on for the support,” he told BBC Scotland.

“It’s disappointing, especially for the players. When you prepare all week, you get a game plan put together, physically you rest, then you get the build-up during the day. You want the release – you want to play, and although it’s wet, it’s not too cold.”

At least Townsend can take some comfort from the knowledge that his players will be slightly fresher than Edinburgh when the two teams meet at Murrayfield on Boxing Day for the first leg of their 1872 Cup double-header. The return fixture will be played at Scotstoun on New Year’s Day.
