Glasgow Hawks poised to swoop for title

Glasgow Hawks’ players know they are just one more win away from the top flight as they prepare to take on local rivals Hillhead/Jordanhill in the RBS National League this afternoon.

As title rivals Hawick were edging out Jed-Forest 42-39 at Riverside Park seven days ago, Hawks were left frustrated by the snow.

It means that they go into this rearranged match at Old Anniesland four points behind the Greens, who have completed their campaign. Any type of victory for Hawks would be good enough for them to lift the title, but any slip ups and Hawick will finish as the top team and the Glasgow side will be in a promotion ‘play-off’ match.

Hawks go into this one pretty much at full strength, with only the likes of Andy Fleming and Ally Maxwell missing. Young scrum-half Sean Yacoubian again keeps hold of the No 9 jersey, leaving Haddon McPherson on the bench against his former team.

Captain Ross Miller and other experienced players will be key in this one too.

Glasgow Hawks co-coach Jamie Dempsey said: “The guys are just really excited to get this game played after snow last Friday night left us twiddling our thumbs.

“We know that Hillhead/Jordanhill will not come to us just to make up the numbers, they have had a good season and we will have to be at our best and keep focused to beat them.”

Hillhead/Jordanhill take the short trip to Old Anniesland guaranteed a top-half finish, quite a feat for them, and they will certainly be keen to spoil the party.

In the other match in the National League today, Biggar, having made sure of their place in the division seven days ago, host Selkirk. The originally match had been postponed on 23 February.
