Glasgow come out of shadows

A THREE-TRY burst in the first half paved the way for the Glasgow shadow squad’s victory over the Exiles at rain-lashed Hughenden last night.

The horrendous conditions made fast-flowing rugby almost impossible - but both sides put together some remarkably slick handling moves.

Glasgow settled first, and broke the deadlock when wing Rory Kerr slid over in the wake of fine work by Graham Thomson, Eddie Manawaiti, Euan Murray and Sam Parlane. The conversion was from a wide angle on the right, but Barry Irving - making a safe comeback from a long injury lay-off - made it look easy.

Exiles responded positively, but initially failed to turn pressure into points. They burst back into the contest with a touchdown by former Glasgow centre Graeme Kiddie. Now playing professionally with Plymouth Albion, as is the Exiles flanker Chris Capaldi, Kiddie squeezed through after a quickly-taken tapped penalty close to the line.

Glasgow’s reply was immediate as their sniping scrum-half Chris Black darted across on the narrow side. The unmarked Thomson increased the hosts’ lead on the stroke of half-time, latching on to a pinpoint Ian McInroy cross-kick - with Irving again adding the extra points.

Substitute stand-off Greg McDonald clawed back three points for the Exiles with a penalty. But it was Glasgow who continued to look the more potent outfit. However, their finishing didn’t match their creative skills.

Kerr should have bagged a hat-trick to match his treble against Sanix of Japan a fortnight earlier, but three times he guddled the ball with the line at his mercy.

McDonald slotted another penalty to keep his side in the hunt, but a fourth Glasgow touchdown by flanker Rory McKay, goaled by Irving, effectively snuffed out their challenge.

Lance Hamilton claimed a late consolation try for the Exiles, converted by McDonald, but there was still time for Thomson to complete his double.
