Glasgow blow as Duncan Weir leg break is confirmed

GLASGOW Warriors have confirmed that stand-off Duncan Weir did suffer a broken leg during last Friday night’s victory over Ospreys, ruling him out of the RaboDirect PRO12 play-offs, almost certainly Scotland’s summer tour to South Africa and possibly the start of next season.

The club revealed yesterday that the 21-year-old underwent successful surgery on a fracture to his right fibula over the weekend and has now been discharged from hospital.

Head coach Gregor Townsend had already resigned himself to being without Weir for Glasgow’s Pro12 play-off campaign and now fears that he will miss the start of next season too.

The club said that the Scotland international would be subject to further assessment in the coming weeks to determine the length his lay-off.

Townsend said: “We’re all gutted for Duncan. He’s had a really good season and he’ll be disappointed to miss the final few games.

“He’s now on the road to recovery and we wish him all the best for his rehabilitation.”

Weir, who earned his fifth Scotland cap in the closing Six Nations match against France last month, said: “I’d like to thank everyone for their messages of support over the weekend. My phone has not stopped and it’s really helped me over the last couple of days.”

Third-placed Glasgow wrap up their regular season a week on Friday away to Connacht, knowing that a top-two finish in the table will earn home advantage in the play-off. For that to happen they will need to win in Galway and hope that Leinster, who moved a point ahead of the Scots into second after winning at Zebre on Sunday, falter at home to Ospreys.

Meanwhile, Glasgow and Scotland flanker John Barclay has revealed that he will be joining Llanelli-based Welsh region Scarlets next season. The 26-year-old, who made his 150th appearance for Glasgow last Friday,
was told in early March that his contract would not be renewed.
