Laidlaw, who won 76 caps for Scotland before retiring from international rugby after the World Cup, is out of contract at Clermont Auvergne in the summer. The former Edinburgh and Gloucester man, who toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2017, was believed to be in advanced negotiations with the French Top 14-toppers Perpignan..

French media have reported that Laidlaw has decided not to go ahead with the move, which leaves the door open for the Jedburgh man to possibly make a return to Scotland and finish a distinguished career.

Laidlaw captained Scotland more than any other player with 39 appearances in the leadership role. He is also Scotland's second-highest points scorer with 714, behind only fellow Borderer Chris Paterson's 809.
