Former Scotland captain Bryan Redpath to quit rugby

Redpath, 45, will leave his role as head coach of Yorkshire Carnegie at the end of the Greene King IPA Championship season to work for AFEX, one of the world’s largest non-bank providers of global payment, foreign currency and risk management solutions.

The former Melrose, Narbonne and Sale scrum-half won 60 caps for Scotland, captaining the team on 26 occasions, and appeared in three World Cups in 1995, 1999 and 2003.

He began his coaching career with Gloucester and also coached Sale before joining Yorkshire Carnegie in March 2015, guiding them to the promotion play-offs and the final of the British & Irish Cup in his first full season.

Carnegie are currently second in the table after just one defeat in 13 games.

The club’s executive president Sir Ian McGeechan said: “Bryan will leave the club this summer stronger than when he arrived.

“An opportunity has arisen for him outside of rugby and we understand his reasons for this next career move. Bryan remains committed to the club for the remainder of the season and I know, from speaking to him, that he has a passion to finish off the job he started two years ago.”

Redpath said: “This new challenge has been a massive decision for me to make 29 years on from starting my career in the Melrose first team.

“There are so many people to thank for helping me have some amazing years and memories in rugby. I look forward to finishing my time in the game on a high this season.”

Former rugby league international James Lowes, who returned to the club last year following his departure from Bradford Bulls, will take over from Redpath and Carnegie also intend to appoint an experienced director of rugby to work alongside him.
