Kyle Rowe and Blair Macpherson bagged two tries apiece as Ayr battled to a bonus-point win at Raeburn Place against newly promoted Edinburgh Accies.

Ayr got off to the perfect start, scoring a try after four minutes, winger Jamie Bova going over. A penalty by stand-off Scott Lyle made it 8-0, and two tries around the half hour mark extended Ayr’s advantage, scores by winger Rowe and back-rower Macpherson making it 18-0.

Just before half-time Accies gave themselves a lifeline when centre George Spencer went over for his side’s first points.

In the 58th minute a try by home winger Cameron Gray certainly made it “game on” with just over a quarter of the match remaining.

Accies had their tails up now and with 15 minutes to go they scored a converted try to take them within one point of the opposition, Spencer going over for his second of the day and stand-off Richard Mill nailing the conversion.

Ayr were looking jittery at that stage, but then Rowe came up with a moment of magic. He cut back in off his wing and burst through the Accies defence to score just to the right of the posts and make it 23-17.

Macpherson’s converted try completed things after an entertaining season opener.
