Currie confident ahead of Hawick Albion test

EDINBURGH league champions, Currie, are aiming to build on their regional success tonight when they face Hawick Albion in the final of the National under-16 Youth Cup I, the first of two matches on the international pitch.

Currie, having opted out of youth rugby at under-18 level over the past two seasons, have enjoyed a resurgence at under-16 level where according to their coach, Andy Jones, numbers have been booming.

“We can field two teams in the Edinburgh under-16 league” said Jones, who is retiring from coaching at this level after tonight’s match. He added: “The final will be the culmination of 11 years together for the boys, most of whom have been with us since primary one.

Currie, who had wins over Mackie and GHA before beating West of Scotland 44-3, boast four Scotland under-16 players who appeared in the Wellington tournament last month, and are confident of a win.

Hawick Albion come to
Murrayfield having had away wins against Glasgow Hawks and Portobello and then a 28-10 home win over Melrose on their way to the final. Albion’s coach, Alastair Chapman said: “We are underdogs, but our forwards are strong and the backs are attacking runners and good defenders.”
