Bryce Hosie makes a big impression for Biggar

BRYCE Hosie will not forget his Dundee HSFP debut in a while after the Kiwi full-back scored 27 points to help the Taysiders beat Biggar 67-11 on the opening weekend of the RBS National League.

Hosie and fellow New Zealander Jack Stewart only arrived in the country last week, but were handed the No 15 and No 10 jerseys respectively for the Mayfield clash.

And they both showed that they will be valuable assets for head coach Colin Robertson’s new backline, with Hosie in particular shining as he scored a try, two penalties and eight conversions. Other try-scorers as Dundee HSFP went top of the fledgling table were Mike Stubbs, Steven Longwell (2), Tim McKavanagh, Callum Bowie and a penalty try.

Biggar, who only just escaped relegation last term, scored a try through Mark Bertram and two penalties from Craig Parker.

Stewart’s Melville are second after they went to Braidholm and beat GHA 44-0. Back-row Donald Sangster, a key man in the Stewart’s Melville side, led the way with two tries as the Edinburgh side showed their intent for 2013-14. The match was over as a contest by half-time with the visitors leading 32-0.Their other try scorers were Ben Wilson, Matt Morrell, skipper Nick McCashin and Peter Macdonald, with McCashin also kicking 14 points.

Watsonians and Boroughmuir also secured bonus point wins on Saturday. ’Sonians were only 17-13 ahead against a 
battling Peebles side at the break, but upped things a gear in the second half to beat Peter Wright’s men 44-22.

Ewan Miller, Rory Steele (2), Allan Jacobsen, Matt Page and Jack Ferguson scored the hosts’ tries with the rest of the points shared by the boots of Ben Di Rollo and Mike Ker. Dale Clancy got Peebles only try, with the talented Greg Raeburn kicking 17 points.

New arrival Alex Cox made an instant impact at Meggetland, as his two tries helped ’Muir saw off Hillhead/Jordanhill 40-19.

Teenage full-back Ed Farquharson was among the other try-scorers while Hillhead/Jordanhill fell short of a bonus point as they only scored three tries.

Winger Frankie Robson grabbed two tries for Kelso as they edged out Borders rivals Selkirk 27-24 at Poynder Park. Kelso’s other points came from the boot of Ben Cooper while Mike McVie scored 14 points for the visitors, but they were just beaten on an enthralling first day of action.
