Aberdeen Grammar win stuns Ayr at Rubislaw

ABERDEEN Grammar turned in a second-half performance which will have the Rubislaw faithful talking for many a year against a shocked Ayr side who had no answer to the combined efforts of an inspired home pack and back division led by stand off Glasgow pro Scott Wight.

“This was a great win after a season of frustration in which we have lost last-gasp games and had some bad injuries,’”said an exuberant Kevin Wyness, the Grammar forwards coach who now finds his side in the top four of the Premiership, requiring a win at Melrose to claim third slot, and a place in next season’s British and Irish Cup.

The win was all the more remarkable for the fact that the home side were tied up at 17-17 at half-time, but set to play into a strong, icy wind in the second half against the new champions.

The home support need not have feared as inspirational captain for the day, flanker Greig Ryan, capped a superb performance with two second half tries.

A hat-trick of touchdowns seemed to have paved the way for the visitors, only for the home side to raise its game. Efforts from scrum half Morgan Ward and winger Grant Walker, both converted by Wight who also kicked a penalty, gave the home side parity at the break.

In the second-half, continual pressure led to Ryan’s two tries before replacement back rower Andrew Cramond clinched the win.

Wight had the last word, his second penalty of the day setting up a date against Melrose at the Greenyards where a victory could leave the Borderers involved in a relegation play off.
