Rugby: Trophy haul leaves ’Muir the merrier

Boroughmuir won a sevens event on Saturday and their under-16s picked up silverware yesterday to round off a perfect weekend for the club.

On Friday night they had won their own sevens tournament and that was followed up the next day with victory at the Penicuik Sevens. In Midlothian they reached the final against Capital rivals Stewart’s Melville and beat them 66-7, Ross Bradford running in five tries.

Yesterday it was the under-16s’ turn to shine, beating GHA to pick up the RBS National Youth League Bowl.

The teenagers won 17-8 at Murrayfield with tries coming from replacement front-row Donald Inwood and stand-off Callum Ramm, with two, which earned him the man of the match trophy. Coach Colin Halliday said: “It’s exciting to have won the Bowl trophy and we’re absolutely delighted. It was a hard game and we thank GHA for making it such a good match.”

Elsewhere this weekend, Heriot’s and Watsonians also picked up trophies. On Saturday Heriot’s won the Haddington Sevens, defeating the host club in the final. And after reaching the semi-finals at the Langholm Sevens on Saturday – an event eventually won by Hawick – Watsonians won the Peebles Sevens yesterday.

Despite losing Ed Hunter to a bad injury early on, the Myreside men regrouped to see off Musselburgh, Old Red Cliffians and Peebles on the way to the final. In the final, Watsonians faced Kings of the Sevens leaders Jed, and they took the game to the Borderers. Mike Ker and Tom Hart ran in tries to help build up a 14-0 lead at the break and four others were scored after the interval, including a great one by Scott McKean, as they won 38-12. Jack Ferguson was named player of the tournament.
