Rugby: Tourney wins for Muir and Watsonians

Watsonians and Boroughmuir both won sevens rugby tournaments on Saturday to keep their good runs in the abbreviated form of the game going.

The Myreside men won their third Kings of the Sevens event in the past fortnight at Selkirk, while ‘Muir’s win at the Hamilton Sevens means they still have a chance to clinch the overall Legacy Sevens Series in the final event at Cartha Queen’s Park this coming weekend.

At Philiphaugh, Watsonians saw off Falkirk, Hawick and Kelso to reach the final against Jed.

‘Sonians didn’t give Jed a chance in the final. Rory Steele, Mike Ker and Tom Hart scored tries in the first half to give the Edinburgh men a 19-7 half-time lead and then try doubles from Paul Tuala and Scott McKean saw them seal a 47-14 victory.

Over in the west, at Laigh Bent, ‘Muir knew that they had to win the event to keep up their hopes of claiming the overall Legacy Sevens Series crown and they did just that. In a close fought final they saw off main overall title rivals Howe of Fife 22-19.
