Rugby: Scotland prop Moray Low out with knee injury

Scotland were today dealt a heavy pre-Six Nations rugby blow when prop forward Moray Low was ruled out for eight weeks with a knee injury.

Compounding the problem is the fact that Low was expected to be one of those providing cover for Euan Murray on two occasions when Scotland will be required to play on Sundays. Murray’s devout Christian beliefs preclude him turning out on the Sabbath.

Following an assessment by a top orthopaedic surgeon, Glasgow Warrior Low was found to have damaged a medial collateral ligament in his knee during Saturday’s match against Scarlets in Llanelli.

Particularly for Sunday matches against Wales and France, it is expected that Geoff Cross, of Edinburgh, will step in to add to his cap tally and Sale’s Ally Dickinson may be required to demonstrate versatility on the less familiar side of the front row.

However, coach Andy Robinson may now have to extend his squad possibly by bringing in Edinburgh’s three times capped Kyle Traynor, normally a loose head prop.

There was better news today of stand off Ruairdh Jackson, who left the field at Llanelli with pain in his upper leg.

An SRU statement said: “No long-term issues are anticipated.”

The Six Nations kicks off on February 4 with Scotland entertaining England.
