Rugby: ’Muir aim to be sevens sent

Boroughmuir kick-off their annual rugby sevens at Meggetland tonight at 6pm.

The event features teams who have already excelled on the circuit this Spring.

Topping the bill are defending champions Glasgow Hawks but they face some stiff competition.

Making the journey south are Aberdeen Grammar FPs who made a mark by reaching the semi-finals in the prestigious Melrose event while Howe of Fife won the Stirling County Cup.

The Stirling event was the first leg of the Legacy Sevens Series, of which tonight’s tournament is a part, and Boroughmuir have an awkward opening tie against Edinburgh University.

The students returned earlier this month from winning an international tournament in Casablanca where their final opponents were a strong South African rugby academy team.

Teams are drawn in two pools and Stewart’s Melville will be fancied contenders.

Stew/Mel include former Boroughmuir player Joni Hare and launch their bid against the Bruce Hay Chiefs, a select combination honouring the memory of one of the hosts’ greatest players.

Others participating are Cartha, Hamilton, Dalziel and Dundee High.

The final is scheduled for 9pm.
