Rugby: MacLean leads procession of medals from Sheffield

Edinburgh University’s MacLean was untouchable on her way to individual karate gold in the women’s senior kumite karate (-50kg) in Sheffield, while she and her female team mates also dominated to win the women’s team kumite title.

Those results inspired other members of Edinburgh University’s karate section as Luke Robinson won the men’s novice kata, Diarmuid Lloyd won the men’s intermediate kata and Valerie Greitens won the women’s novice kata.

Greitens won gold in another section too, while Yusuke Onishi and Joe Farrimond also won individual events and the university took the overall team title.

Heriot-Watt’s best result came in the men’s team kumite where they beat Manchester University to the gold medal. Callum Robb also won the men’s senior kumite (+84kgs).

In fencing, Edinburgh University’s Edmondo Riva won the men’s foil while the women’s team of Lisa McKenzie, Louise Heyler, Catriona Sibert, Lis Gernerd, Chloe Roy, Lucy Henshall won a silver medal.

In volleyball, the Edinburgh University men’s team battled their way to a bronze. The squad was made up of Glenn Robison, German Georgiev, Stuart Parker, Ben Hunter, Jamie McHardy, Sigurd Norsterud, Ross Kirkwood, Jason Ebbin and Paolo Puggioni.

Edinburgh University’s team of Stewart Armitage, Callum Morgan, Ian Johnstone and Gary McIntyre were joint third in men’s table tennis.

Patrick Dawson and Ivan Croupin (both Edinburgh University) won individual golds in judo and Ian Feenan (Napier) and Artem Barkanov (Edinburgh University) won individual silvers.

And in climbing, Edinburgh University’s Natalie Berry won an individual gold.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh University students also did well in the BUCS Orienteering Championships at the weekend. In the men’s event Hector Haines was first and Rebecca Harding was first in the women’s section.
