Rugby: Lismore take the Northern Sevens title

LISMORE won the Edinburgh Northern Sevens on Saturday at Inverleith Park, defeating Portobello in an entertaining final.

After an enjoyable day's rugby, featuring a number of local sides, Lismore came out on top over the men from Cavalry Park 36-31 to take home the Blyth and Blyth Northern Cup.

In the lesser events, the winners also scored 36 points each in the finals, Trinity Accies defeating associate club Edinburgh Accies to take the Inverleith Bowl after extra time and Penicuik seeing off Inverleith in the Pond Plate.

Meanwhile, at the North Berwick Sevens,

East Lothian rivals Haddington won the Cup at Recreation Park, while Hawick Linden took the Plate back to the Borders.

On the Kings of the Sevens circuit, Watsonians did not have the best weekend in their bid to retain the trophy.

On Saturday, at the Hawick Sevens – which the home club eventually won for the third time in a row – 'Sonians were under strength as a result of their first XV playing at Melrose and lost to Edinburgh Accies in extra time during round one.

Accies went on to lose 19-7 to Gala in the last eight.

And yesterday at Scremerston, Watsonians had some big guns back but lost in the last eight of the Berwick Sevens.

After sweeping aside Langholm in round one – with teenager Jamie Forbes scoring a hat-trick of tries – they squandered a 10-0 lead to lose 12-10 to Jed-Forest.

Edinburgh Accies reached the quarter-finals too before losing out to Kelso, while Murrayfield Wanderers went out in round one to the hosts.

Selkirk won the event, new Edinburgh pro signing Lee Jones the star of the show.
