Rugby: Heriot’s beat Currie to make Edinburgh Cup final

Heriot’s booked their place in the RBS Edinburgh Cup final against Boroughmuir with a fine 26-12 win over a depleted Currie side at Goldenacre.

The hosts had tries by OJ Brown, Jason Hill and Graham Wilson – who kicked the other points – and ensured the victory with an exceptional defensive effort in the third quarter when the visitors, who were hampered by injuries and representative calls and fielded an inexperienced back division, were twice held up over the line.

Currie’s points came through two tries from Mike Entwhistle – the second of which was converted by Dave Smith.

Meanwhile, Muir ran in five tries to see off Biggar 35-7 at Meggetland, although the match was closer than the score might suggest. Tries from Ally Davidson and Keith Buchan, both converted by Ally Warnock, gave Broughmuir a 14-0 interval lead but a converted score from Cammy Thomson hauled Biggar back into the contest and it took further scores from the impressive Buchan, a penalty award and the clincher from Callum MacIntosh, all converted by Warnock, to complete the job.

Edinburgh Accies suffered a dent to their hopes of securing a top two finish in RBS Premier B when they lost 29-20at Hawick. Ross Browne and Dan Teague had a try apiece for Accies, with the other points coming from kicks but, despite being only 12-10 in arrears at the interval, Accies were unable overcome a host side that now shares top spot with Heriot’s, the Borderers’ opponents on Saturday.
